The Hudson Cafe – Detroit
Downtown
Breakfast on Woodward: Hudson Cafe is named for the old Hudson's department store, so you're in the middle of Detroit history from the first cup of coffee.

Classic · One day
Breakfast on Woodward, an Art Deco lobby, the riverfront, a free elevated loop, a coney dog, the streets of old Detroit and Diego Rivera's murals.
One day in town? Skip the parking hunt. Downtown is easy on foot, the People Mover loops you above the streets for free, and the QLINE streetcar runs up Woodward to the museums. Spend the morning on downtown icons, the afternoon in Midtown's two big museums and the evening at a great table nearby.

Wirt C. Rowland's 1929 Art Deco skyscraper is even better inside: marble, bright ceramics and geometric patterns, with Pewabic tile in the lobby. The lobby is open to visitors; the office floors aren't.
A few minutes' walk down to Woodward.

Marshall Fredericks' green bronze, dedicated in 1958, is the city's symbol; the little family in its hand stands for human relationships. The Joe Louis fist and the river are just steps away.
Cut through Hart Plaza to the riverfront.

Stroll east on the RiverWalk with Windsor and Canada across the water and the RenCen towers behind you. No need to do it all; pick a comfortable stretch and take your time with the views.
Board the People Mover at the Renaissance Center station.

Driverless cars on a 2.9-mile, 13-station loop above downtown: about fifteen minutes a lap, and free. It's the leftover piece of a subway network that was never built, and it's become a downtown icon.
Get off at Financial District and walk a few minutes to Lafayette Boulevard.

Lunch is a coney dog, the Detroit classic. American Coney Island is right next door, so two legends share the block; this is where you pick a side.
Walk to Campus Martius and ride the QLINE up to the Ferry Street stop.

Midtown
An hour here and the rest of the city makes more sense. The Streets of Old Detroit recreate the old town, alongside the story of car manufacturing, local communities and cultural life.
Just cross Woodward: the DIA is on the other side.

Midtown
In Rivera Court, Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry murals put factory workers and industrial power at the heart of the museum. If you have time left, wander into a gallery you didn't plan on, not just the famous paintings.
A pleasant Midtown walk, or a short ride, over to Second Avenue.
